The undersigned hereby petition the Sergeant-at-Arms to forward a request for suspension of the rules in order for the 2007 Action Agenda Convention of the Massachusetts Democratic Party to consider the following resolution:
Resolution for the Withdrawal of U.S. Troops from Iraq
Whereas, the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq represents a gross violation of international law, a wrongful intrusion of our military power into the cauldron of the Middle East and a self-destructive detour from our national morality, goals, traditions, and policies;
Whereas, regardless of the actual intentions or knowledge of President Bush and Vice President Cheney, the initiation of this War was based on false and/or inadequate information and undemocratically and deceptively pursued;
Whereas, the continuation of the evil and universally hurtful War into its fifth year is irreparably damaging to the United States domestically and internationally because it is tearing down our armed forces, denigrating our reputation before the whole world, stimulating terrorist extremism, weakening the slow and difficult international peace process, harming the earth's fragile ecosystems, depleting our treasury, and making more difficult the immense task of securing our national future and the well-being, freedoms and safety of generations world-wide to come;
Whereas, the selfless actions of our Armed Forces demands a mission worthy of their sacrifices;
Whereas, the toll of our actions in Iraq includes the ceaseless and unnecessary deaths and suffering inflicted on our troops, whose families now pay and will continue to pay an agonizing price for our unprecedented and bizarre rush to war;
Whereas, the past, present and continuing horrific death toll among the Iraqi population as well as the flight of Iraqi citizens by the millions from the killing fields are also an unacceptable consequence of the U.S. occupation;
Whereas, Congressman Dennis Kucinich has introduced a bill, H.R. 1234, which calls for, inter alia, the withdrawal from Iraq of all U.S. Armed Forces within three months of the enactment of the bill; simultaneous withdrawal of all U.S. contractors and sub-contractors; the closing of U.S. military bases; the reorganization of reconstruction activities in Iraq; the promotion of a United Nations-led peacekeeping mission in Iraq; and the limiting of U.S. funding to the withdrawal of troops, consultations with the Iraqi Government and other governments, and the United Nations-led peacekeeping mission.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Massachusetts Democratic Party urge its Senators and Congressmen in Washington to support vigorously the enactment as soon as possible of H.R. 1234 and to emphasize in so doing the utter immortality of allowing U.S. troops and innocent Iraqis to die and be maimed in a war that is harming rather than enhancing U.S. national security and honor. |
