September 2003
Governor Romney introduced his "Economic Stimulus Package" to combat
the near 300,000 jobs lost in the Commonwealth. His plan: if a company adds
more than 25 manufacturing jobs, the State will kick back to that company
half of the new employees' state income taxes. The result: "There is
a huge pressure on politicians to look like they're doing something, and what
it all boils down to is [the Romney plan] is motivated more by political than
economic consideration. It won't cost a lot of money, but it won't create
a lot of jobs." David Tuerck, executive director of the Beacon Hill Institute
at Suffolk University.
