Caucus Rockport Democratic Town Committee

Saturday, Feb 2, 2008 – Rockport Public Library

Chairperson Ann Sheinwald called the meeting to order at 10:30AM.  Ann announced that we needed to elect delegates to the State Democratic Convention that will be held in Lowell on June7, 2008.  She asked all interested in running for delegate to sign up, if they had not already. Delegates’ expenses (other than hotel) are paid by the town committee.

We are entitled to 2 men, 2 women and 2 alternates.  The chairman attends ex officio.

Each candidate spoke for approximately one minute telling why they wanted to attend the Convention.

The following delegates were elected:

Women delegates: June McCloy and Heather Nelson.

Alternate: Carol Gaudette.

Men delegates: Jim McCloy and Thomas Delaney.

Alternate: Michael Shea.

A new delegate category, Youth Delegate, was described as someone between the ages of 18 and 35.  This delegate would be suggested by a local committee and the final selection will depend on the State committee.  Mark Dewan was not elected as a regular male delegate, but expressed interest in serving as a Youth Delegate.  He has filled out the required papers and hopes to attend the Convention.

The Caucus was concluded at 11:35AM.

In other business, there was much discussion of how to get more youth involvement in campaigns and voting.  June Michaels mentioned the League of Women Voters outreach to schools that attempts to add “How to be an informed voter” topics to civics classes.  She also suggested that the town committee might host a “Watch a TV Debate” event to spark community discussion and involvement.

This discussion was adjourned at 11:50AM.

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy Jo Delaney,

Recording Secretary
