Chair Sheinwald called the meeting at the Rockport Library to order at 1:00 p.m. The agenda began with discussion concerning the Cape Ann Headquarters’ office. Ann indicated that the Gloucester City Committee rented space at a prime location, next to Passports Restuarant, & the rent is $2,400 for 6 weeks. Two phone lines are being provided by the State Committee. According to the Treasurer’s report, the Town Committee’s treasury amounted to revenue of $2,063.54, less $149.73 in expenses for the quarter (flowers to speaker, $40.25, July picnic expenses, $59.48, and $50 to the Ispwich Town Committee) for a total remaining of $1,1913.92. As a result, the Committee voted to donate $800 toward the Cape Ann Headquarters expenses. The check was immediately written and handed to Catherine Bayliss of the Gloucester City Committee.
Helen Rush Lloyd who attended organizational meetings for the upcoming election reported that sign holding visibilities are scheduled as follows: 4-6 Fridays at Grant Circle, 8-10a.m. at Five Corners on Saturdays. Helen brought sign-up sheets for the sign holding actions, for Headquarters duty, and for lawn signs. Helen also attended the Cape Ann Coalition Meeting in Ipswich. Mike Walsh is the coordinator and the next meeting is October 23rd. In addition she attended the League of Women Voters meeting and will be going to Gordon College to encourage young people to register to vote.
Ann advised that she will be in touch with Tierney’s office about lawn signs.
Peggy O’Malley spoke about Andrew Armata, Candiate for State Senator. If elected, she believes he will be effective and do what’s necessary to keep Addison Gilbert Hospital open and, if not elected, she thinks AGH will close. She is encouraging people to put up lawn signs and to remember him when doing phone banks. The Mass. Nurses Association has endorsed him.
Mike Rostkowski (546-3205) is coordinating the lawn sign campaign. He wants to hear from anyone with a high profile site. He went to hear Clinton speak for Shannon. Clinton indicated that it is more important than we think to get her elected. Helen mentioned that if Kerry runs for President in 2004, the next Governor will appoint the new Senator.
Catherine Bayliss added that if the Headquarters Office is not open when volunteers arrive to cover the office, there will be a key two doors down (exact location to follow). She is hoping to add 7-8:30a.m. visibilities on Monday mornings in Gloucester. The place is not yet decided. Contact: cbayliss@gloucestersystems.com or phone 978-283-8901. Phone bank hours are Monday - Thursday 6:30 - 9:00 and weekend afternoons 2-4 or 3-5. The script contains questions such as: what do you consider the most compelling issue? who do you support for each office? The info will be faxed into State headquarters each night. A list of all Gloucester and Rockport unenrolled voters is at Headquarters. Ann encouraged everyone to be sure to sign up and also list e-mail addresses. Also she urged people to thank Kennedy and Tierney for their votes in Congress on the current situation. She indicated that she will take care of notices about free rides to the polls. The phone at headquarters is 978-281-2280, with answering machine.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:15 p.m. No date has been fixed for the next meeting.
