"As a lawmaker,
I certainly understand and respect the role of the SJC to define
what the Massachusetts constitution requires. I believe Justice
Marshall has rendered a sound decision based on principles of equal
protection. In striking down a ban against gay unions, the Court
has recognized the fundamental rights of gay couples who were previously
denied equal protection under the law and I fully support that decision."
