Mass Democratic Future's Chair Jonathan Chines' Statement on the SJC Ruling

"I am very encouraged by today's ruling that same-sex couples are legally entitled to wed under the Commonwealth's constitution. This decision sends a positive message of inclusion to couples and families of all backgrounds and sexual orientations.

"Gay and lesbian couples who choose to marry deserve the same rights and privileges that heterosexual couples enjoy. Most Americans, especially a majority of young people, recognize that.

"Massachusetts Democratic Future has been working to support gay marriage and oppose Defense of Marriage Amendments (DOMAs) in Massachusetts since our founding in 1992. We will continue to advocate for the freedom to marry for all same-sex couples in Massachusetts and are committed to fighting to make sure this ruling is fully implemented by the legislature.

"Young people understand that legal recognition of marriage between same sex couples is not about religion or sociology, but equal rights under the law. We thank GLAD and the plaintiffs in this historic lawsuit for their commitment to expanding the rights of gay and lesbian couples in Massachusetts. We are proud to characterize them as pioneers and leaders in civil rights for our generation."
