Senator Edward Kennedy's Statement on the SJC Ruling

"Today's decision is a welcome new milestone on the road to full civil rights for all our citizens. It's wrong for any state to discriminate against gays and lesbians by denying them the many benefits and protections that the laws of the state provide for married couples.

Nothing in today's decision requires any church to accept same-sex marriages. The decision deals only with the many rights available to married couples under state law, including the right to be treated fairly by the tax laws, to share insurance coverage, to visit loved ones in the hospital, and to receive health, family leave, and survivor benefits. Gay couples deserve these rights as well."
